It’s no secret that a lot of women love their yoga pants, those black stretchy knit flare pants or leggings.
And who can blame us? They’re beyond comfortable.
Problem is, you’ve been telling me, when you wear them pretty much 24/7.
Here are some other problems you’ve mentioned:
- Not wearing much else besides those yoga pants
- Wearing yoga pants that are stretched out and old
- Feeling uncomfortable doing errands, going to meetings, and so on, in yoga pants and running into friends and colleagues who are a little more dressed.
It IS possible to wear yoga pants and look pretty good! Certainly good enough for those random things you end up doing when you want to be comfortable.
Here are some ways to add some style to those black stretch pants:
Throw on some jewelry. There’s nothing like a pair of big hoops and a pendant necklace to spruce up an outfit based on yoga pants.
Switch out the shoes. The real distinction between “in gym clothes all today” and “I may or may not have done some yoga today, but don’t I look awesome anyway?” is the shoes. Sneakers are great, but if you’re looking for a way to polish your yoga pants, try a bootie or ballet flat instead. (Fashion sneakers are an exception to this; the whole athleisure trend is still going strong, and the key is whether you look like you’ve just come from the gym.)
Cover your tush. This part is essential. Wear a longer top or a sleek top plus jacket to transform your yoga/gym clothes into street clothes.
Uplevel your accessories. Add a scarf and a fabulous bag and you’re good to go — looking great, and feeling really comfortable.
Assess the pants themselves. It’s easy for those trusty old yoga pants to start looking a little tired. Regularly take a look at them and replace them when necessary. Plus: Your best bet is pants that are fairly tame and neutral, not wildly colorful and patterned. Most important, make sure they’re not in any way sheer (except for some strategic mesh cutouts).
Don’t mistake them for work wear. No matter what you hear or read, yoga pants are not acceptable in the work place. Ever.
How do you wear your yoga pants? (Or maybe you don’t, except to the gym.) I’d love to hear about it. Leave a comment and let me know!
