Jewelry trends to update your look
As a stylist, one of my favorite tricks to use with clients is to update their accessories, and this season is no different. Fall of 2017 we are seeing a few trends that aren’t exactly new, and so in some cases you can go directly to your stash of oldies-but-goodies and find what you need right there. In other cases you’ll need to go out and find the pieces that will give you the update for the season. The good news there is that every trend can be found at every price point.
Layering necklaces
Not a new trend, but this jewelry trend is still going strong for Fall 2017, and it’s can be a little tricky. In fact, this is where a stylist can come in handy—getting all the layering components
to work together. But you absolutely can try this yourself. The key is to keep all the pieces in the same family: organic and earthy or sleek and polished, whatever is right for the occasion and your own style. Don’t be afraid to mix metals, but in general, it’s a good rule of thumb to keep colors and materials in the same family.
What’s new right now are chokers, and I LOVE them. You don’t need to be a teenager or a clubgoer to wear one, but here it’s especially important to wear a metal or other color that flatters you.
Anchoring the whole layered thing should be a pendant necklace. Key details are huge right now and you can find a wonderful one on Etsy.
A choker is a particularly of-the-minute addition to the layers.
And then you’ll want one or two pieces to wear in between. Chances are good you’ll have those things right there in your jewelry box: a little diamond on a chain, say, or some other more personal piece. Or it could be a strand of beads. Play around with the combinations until you find one that looks right and feels great.
And voila! Your layered necklaces!
Statement rings
We’ve seen big rings before but they’re here this season too. Don’t be worried about matching this to your engagement and wedding rings; if a metal “mismatch” bothers you, just wear your statement piece on the other hand and don’t think about it again.
Your statement ring ideally will connect in some way to the other jewelry you’re wearing—in color or overall style. Bonus points if it echoes the color of your hair or your eyes.
Make sure to gesture broadly and often wearing your statement ring. 🙂
Hoop earrings
You almost certainly have some hoops in your jewelry box. (Another tried-and-true stylist’s trick is to see what the client already has.) Are they dainty and careful or are they big and bold? This season we’re seeing larger hoop earrings. They don’t need to reach your shoulders. And we’re seeing cool details on hoops now, too. These especially don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, so it’s worthwhile investing in this update.
If you work in a more traditional setting, these may work well for you. Certainly they’re wonderful for after hours.
If you’d just like a pair of large old-style hoops, that’s great true. You can find them many, many places, including flea markets, consignment stores, online resale boutiques, and even places like airport gift shops.
