I recently checked a site I really like, the Black Snob. She’s got a terrific round-up of pictures of Michelle Obama on the campaign trail.
Here, I love the color of the jacket and the contrast of the purple sleeves peeking out from underneath. I think she may look better in warmer colors, but this turquoise really stands out, and that’s what she needs when she’s on the stump.
She paired the jacket and T with skinny jeans, and although she looks current, I think we can all agree it’s not the most flattering look. (So translate that to your own shorter, rounder self and acknowledge that these jeans are just better left to others.)
Now, the Black Snob also has pictures of Obama in red (and a couple other outfits, too). In both, notice how her sleeves are pushed up. Yes, sure, it may be a warm day wherever she is. But I love how the rolled-up sleeves make her look ready to work, unscripted, and fresh — in other words, hard-working, focused on the job at hand, not perfect. (I also love the absence of distracting jewelry — her pared-down look makes me feel overdone, and that’s true even though she loves pins and is, in fact, wearing one on the red sweater.)
